Varsity Girls Upset Blessed Trinity in Season Opener
Tough defense and timely threes guided the Eagles to victory over the 6A powerhouse Blessed Trinity
Berkley Vinson scored 11 of her game-high 14 points in the third quarter to lead Mt. Bethel Christian to a 38-36 upset over Blessed Trinity in the season-opener.
Gbayito Oluwatomisin added 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Ella McDaniel chipped in nine points and collected four steals. Annie Dinschel finished with three points, a game-high six steals, and 10 rebounds.
The game was a defensive slugfest that saw the Eagles lead the Titans, 5-4, after the first eight minutes. The Titans were the first team to heat up in the second quarter and used that to take a 21-14 lead into the half.
The third started with Oluwatomisin getting a quick two on an aggressive drive to the basket to kickstart the comeback. Vinson and McDaniel would hit five threes as MB outscored BT 19-8 in the quarter to take a 33-28 lead in the fourth.
The Titans would battle back to take the lead late, but Oluwatomisin's tough drive for two followed by a pair of free throws gave the Eagles the lead for good. McDaniel hit 1-2 from the line with 3.3 seconds remaining and a half-court heave for BT didn't connect to give MB the 38-36 victory.
MB, 1-0 on the season, will look to continue their winning ways as they travel to face Lovett on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
