Fourth Grade

Using Positive Action for Christ’s elementary series, the theme for this year is "Building Life Castles". This curriculum is represented by five primary truths: Jesus Christ is our Savior, His parables teach us key lessons about living a Christian life, the Holy Spirit and the Fruits of the Spirit shape our character, we must have confidence and trust in God, and every Christian has a purpose. As students study the New Testament and the life and writings of the Apostle Paul, they are led in daily prayers and are expected to memorize and write key Bible verses. Students learn to expand their mission reach across the globe by supporting Project 82, a Kenyan orphanage, as their grade-level mission project.

Using Progress in Mathematics, students are exposed to a variety of mathematical functions, including: geometry, polygons, parallel and perpendicular lines, angles, data and graphing, number sentences, algebraic equations, number stories, decimals, large number estimation and computation, fractions, percents, three dimensional shapes, weight, volume, capacity, and multiplication and division. In addition to daily practice, students also use a multitude of hands-on activities to reinforce learning.

Fourth grade students read grade-appropriate novels and complete a variety of activities designed to improve comprehension and critical thinking. Students participate in both whole group and small group novel studies in order to differentiate and develop growth. Students are expected to read both fiction and non-fiction books independently.

Students are immersed in topics that include weather, the water cycle, states of matter, the solar system, sound and light, forces and motion, biomes, and fire safety. A field trip to the Fire Safety Village, STEM projects, and a variety of hands-on experiments help students apply their knowledge to real-life situations. 

Students explore the five themes of geography, memorize the names and location of the fifty states, investigate the beginning of our country’s history from early explorers to the first European settlements, colonization, and the American Revolution. To conclude our studies, students take a field trip to the Cobb Youth Museum to experience and participate in simulations of the events we have studied including the Constitutional Convention.

Students will delve deeper into previously-taught concepts using the Grammar Workshop program. Concepts include the eight parts of speech, types of sentences, and proper sentence development. Working closely with those ideas, students will construct appropriate paragraphs and use that form in multi-paragraph writing assignments. Topics covered include short stories, along with persuasive, informative, and narrative writing. In Spelling, students continue with the Spelling Connections series to increase their word analysis skills. By learning not just the word’s spelling and definition but also parts of speech, analogies, and words in context, students develop a more comprehensive vocabulary to be used in their writing.

Students continue in the discipline of cursive writing in fourth grade.
